Automotive Stamping Steel Strip

16MnCr5 · 42CrMo · 51CrV4 · GCr15 · 30CrMo · C75S — For Gears, Clutch Plates, Transmission Parts

Automotive Requirements for Steel Strip

Automotive component stamping combines tight dimensional control with high production volumes. Material consistency supports stable feeding and forming, but final part capability must be validated through the customer's tooling, process controls and inspection plan.

Automotive applications can impose traceability, quality-system and approval-document requirements. The buyer should state the required heat-number link, inspection certificate, PPAP scope and applicable supplier qualification before quotation; none should be assumed from the application name alone.

Progressive Die Stamping Requirements

Our strip is optimized for progressive die feeding. The critical parameters:

ParameterOur SpecificationImpact on Stamping
Thickness ToleranceConfirm per RFQ and measurement methodMust match the drawing and forming process.
Width ToleranceConfirm per RFQ and edge conditionMust match the feed and tooling requirements.
Flatness≤5 I-unitsNo buckling in feed, consistent blank positioning for transfer dies.
Camber≤2mm per meterStrip tracks straight through feeder. No progressive drift causing misfeed.
Burr Height≤5% of thicknessClean slit edges prevent die wear and part defects from burr interference.
Coil SetLeveled to ≤15mm radiusLead end feeds without manual intervention. Enables lights-out running.

Case Hardening Grades (16MnCr5, 20MnCr5)

Gears and pinions represent the highest-value automotive components produced from strip. Case-hardening grades like 16MnCr5 are designed to be carburized after forming:

Traceability and Document Requirements

State which of the following items are mandatory so availability, source and scope can be confirmed before ordering:

Inspection Certificate

Material test documentation can include agreed chemical, mechanical and metallographic results. Confirm the required inspection-document type and test scope at enquiry.

Heat Number Traceability

Define the required link between source heat, processing records and finished coil, together with the identifiers that must appear on documents and labels.

Process Control Documentation

Process and inspection records are retained according to applicable quality-system and customer-specific requirements. Audit access and retention periods should be agreed during supplier qualification.

Typical Automotive Components

Transmission Gears

Fine-blanked or stamped planetary gears, ring gears, synchronizer rings from 16MnCr5. Strip thickness 2.0-6.0mm for direct gear stamping.

Clutch Plates

Friction plate carriers and separator plates from 65Mn or C75S. Require precise flatness (≤0.05mm) and consistent thickness for clutch pack assembly.

Spring Components

Diaphragm springs (51CrV4), Belleville washers, wave springs, retaining clips. All benefit from our hardened and tempered delivery option.

Bearing Cages & Races

Stamped needle bearing cups, thrust washer races from GCr15. Progressive die production at 80+ strokes/minute demands perfect strip consistency.
